Preserved knowledge: Summaries and compilations
Dubischar, Markus
This contribution consists of four parts. The introduction sketches the marginalized position of
summaries and compilations in current scholarship. Part two focuses on summaries (epitomai).
After an overview of preserved texts, this text type's formal and functional characteristics are
explored. The third part deals with large derivative compilations. Four texts are discussed and
important common features pointed out, such as their authors' expertise as well as the great
influence these works have subsequently had. In the fourth and final part, the vitally important
communicative function of summaries and compilations is assessed by interpreting the
contribution's earlier findings in light of communications and systems theory (especially of
Niklas Luhmann and Rudolf Stichweh).
